Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. To start off, Natalie and I are sharing a cell phone. Which is an entire post in itself, but I'll try to keep this focused on Lent. I had told Natalie to pick me up from work before church. Later that day I had forgotten that I told her that and walked home. I got home, and no Natalie. I didn't have a phone to call her so I just sat there.
Time went by and she came home. She yelled at me a little and we hurried of to the six o' clock service. The reason that is important is because Natalie was the one behind the wheel.
We drove to the downtown Methodist church, and Natalie missed the best turn to get there and park close. This is because of all of the one-way streets downtown. So we had to come around from behind, which became a problem because of all the traffic due to church and the general business at that time of day in Iowa City.
We found a lot that looked suitable to park in, and she pulled in. After pulling into a spot the sign said "Parking for St. Mary's Catholic Church Only." We were going to "a church" not that one so we parked there anyway.
Church was fine, they rubbed some sort of tar on our foreheads instead of ash and then asked us to come back up and wash it off. Church ended and we both felt very blessed, and we headed out to the car without saying our hellos to the pastors, of which there were three and we had no time to chat...American Idol was starting in fifteen minutes.
Once at the car I noticed something wrong. The lot we parked in was now full of cars. Not only the parking spots, but they pull in all of the available driving lanes which completely blocks us in. From the looks of it their service was just beginning, and at first glance it was going to be impossible to drive through the drift / concrete in front of us. So I decided, we should grab a bite at the world famous "Hamburg Inn #2".
Dinner was delicious, and we walked back to the car....still blocked in. Now that it was completely dark and cold we reevaluated the situation. A car two spots to our right had driven through the drift and gotten out from behind the blockade. I started poking around in the drift and noticed that the alley was sloping down and our position had a much higher curb than the other car. Our options at this point are to sit and wait it out, walk home and come back later, or drive through the drift. Natalie kept insisting that we could drive out, but I had my doubts. I reluctantly agreed and started breaking up the drift with a ice scraper.
Once I had moved a lot of snow and packed it down along the curb (hoping it would hold the car up a little) I had Natalie pull the car forward. Progress was going well until all of a sudden....nothing....one tire spinning....the other nothing and the car wasn't moving. I tried to push but there wasn't any budge. The first thought was it was just slipping, but in the back of my thoughts I knew, we had been hung up on the curb. The front of our car was hanging out into the alley and it was completely stuck. Panic started setting in and I didn't really know how myself and Natalie were going to get out of the situation.
